Cambium

Completion: 2026

Location: Sound Transit, Kent + Des Moines, WA

Description: This glass artwork envisions a narrative synergy between the multicultural diversity of Kent and Des Moines and the natural beauty that surrounds these communities. The artwork is inspired by the natural phenomenon of branches from two trees that have grown together and interwoven over time. Expressed in graphically treated glass integrated throughout the station, "Cambium" refers to a ring of cells in tree branches that allow for growth. Although composed of individual panels of glass, our approach to the overall artwork composition imbues the work with a sculptural sense of dimensionality and volume. Expressed in elevation as an arch composed of branches that follow the bridge configuration of the station platform, this gesture evokes notions of embrace, friendship, and crossing divides. The work celebrates how multicultural diversity has contributed to the rich vitality of Kent and Des Moines.
