Compass

Completion: 2026

Location: Route 66, Bridgeport, OK

Description: Exploring the intersection of art and engineering, Compass stands adjacent to the famous Pony Bridge near Bridgeport, Oklahoma. The recently restored bridge, originally built in 1933, is a model of engineering innovation, featuring open space between the verticals of the “camelback” truss spans, allowing for increased clearance and scenic views. Expressing the gravity-defying nature of a bridge, the sculpture is designed to look like a giant drawing compass made from the bridge’s yellow riveted steel while serving as a metaphor to Oklahomans' ability to stand strong in the face of adversity. Honoring mid-century Googie style, Compass captures some of the whimsical sensibility of roadside attractions and angular motel signage common along Route 66.
